"transcript": "Thanks for joining us here at News 12. I'm Lisa Salvatorini. A woman is now facing charges after police say she attacked a 14-year-old inside this local library. Let's get right to News 12's Lisa La Rocca. She's in Bronxville outside that public library where it all happened, Lisa. Yes, certainly unusual incident here and for now that woman has been told to stay away from the library. Now, according to police, the incident occurred about 5 o'clock on Monday evening. Investigators say a 14-year-old from Yonkers claims 30-year-old Molly Staunton of Bronxville suddenly attacked. The teen told police, quote, I was sitting down, not talking or bothering talking to or bothering anybody, when a woman yelled at me, asking what I said to her. I responded, Nothing. Police say that's when Staunton allegedly began punching the teen several times. In the arm, investigators say the teen is OK. Meantime, Molly Staunton was arrested the next day and charged with endangering the welfare of a child and harassment. Now people we spoke with in the area were of course surprised to hear about the incident. I wouldn't expect something like that to happen in our neighborhood. Mollie Stanton was arraigned and served with a temporary order of protection on behalf of the victim and as we said, has been told not to come back to the library. "transcript": "This morning a man has been critically hurt after a shooting in a Suffolk County neighborhood. Police are searching right now for whoever is responsible. News 12's Jonathan Gordon is in West Babylon. That's where witnesses say the victim, Jonathan, drove himself to the gas station before calling police. This is where the victim ended up, but this is now an investigation that spans multiple locations, two different crime scenes about 1 mile apart. So obviously a lot of moving parts here when it comes to this investigation here at the gas station where this sort of all ended up. You can see it is back open up today after it had been closed down for about 6 hours overnight as part of the investigation as police swarmed this area trying to collect evidence and make sense of what had unfolded. You can imagine how terrifying this must have been for both the gas station workers and anyone who was here filling up their cars not that late last night. Take a look at the video. This was the gas station last night here about 8:30. According to an employee, the shooting victim, only identified by Suffolk County police as a 20-year-old Westbury man, arrived at the gas station at the corner of Straight Path and Little East Neck Road in West Babylon by car. It's unclear exactly how he got here, but according to the employee, the victim was with someone else. When he arrived, video from the gas station shows a massive response. Investigators speaking with someone seated near the mini mart and an emergency kit on the ground near a car parked by a pump. But according to Suffolk County police, the shooting didn't happen here. It actually happened about 1 mile from here in the backyard of a home on Patton Avenue in Wyandan. It's a more residential neighborhood, about a 2 minute drive from where we are now. That employee I spoke with here at the gas station says he is just hoping this is the end of the violence. I hope this thing is the last one also in the neighborhood, and I hope the peace for everybody. Now that employee tells me that the first responders were giving aid to the victim here at the gas station before he was taken to a hospital where he's still listed in critical condition. At this point it's still an active and ongoing investigation. Suffolk County police have not yet said if they've made any arrests in the case. We'll bring you updates as we get them. "transcript": "Police say that 3 people are likely behind a string of iPad robberies happening across our borough, and they need your help tracking them down. News 12's Edric Robinson is in Fort Greene this morning. Good morning, Edric. What's the update out there? Yeah, Marcy, I'm standing right outside of this Apple store here on Flatbush Avenue. It's where police say the first of 4 robberies were reported at. They say all of them happening in a very similar way. People who walked out of the stores were followed, then had their bags or iPads taken right out of their hands. Now take a look at these images police released of the 3 people that they're looking for. You want to take a close look. They're all dressed in black wearing these black bubble coats going through. A subway turnstile. Investigators say those photos come from one of the most recent robberies on December 28th. Police tell us that a 17-year-old left the store here on Flatbush Avenue. He was followed onto an R train, and after getting off at a stop, the group then grabbed his bag and ran off. Now earlier in the month, back on December 5th, they say a man walking out of this same Flatbush Avenue location had an iPad taken from. His hand right off the bat. Then on December 22nd, police say a woman in downtown Brooklyn had a bag with an iPad taken as she walked along State Street. And later on December 28th, this is the 4th robbery reported. Police say a woman in Manhattan was pushed to the ground, the thieves making off with a bag with iPads. Now I've been catching up with folks here who say these reports are a sobering reminder to stay alert while moving around out here. Take a listen. That's terrible, you know. It's like this is the type of world we live in and I hope everybody's safe. I always take precaution, you know, look at my surrounding where I'm at and. Yeah. And police tell us that last victim had minor injuries. All other victims were not hurt. Now police sources do tell us that it happened here at the Rainbow clothing store on East Fordham Road. Now take a look at the three people that they're looking for. Take a very good look. This is who police say entered Rainbow on December 23rd at around 6:40 in the evening. Now, as we all know, around that time. Fordham Road is at its busiest, especially two days before Christmas. Police tell us as the trio started taking products, a 22-year-old employee tried to stop them, and that's when two of the robbers punched and kicked him multiple times. Now two of his co-workers did try to jump in and stop the fight, and we're also told were assaulted in the process. All three suspects ran off towards Valentine Avenue, and at this hour it's not clear if they got away with any merchandise. Now all 3 of those employees were injured in this robbery attempt. Now 1 did go to the hospital, and that is the one that initially tried to stop them from taking merchandise. Thankfully he is expected to be OK, and the other 2 that tried to break up the fight, they did sustain minor injuries but are also expected to be OK. He sat down exclusively with News Twelve's Kelly Kennedy, sharing his pain and his plea for justice. Maniru Zuromi, the brother of 55-year-old Issa Isaac Mbolo, is still struggling to understand how a normal night. Ended in tragedy. Police say Isaac Bolo had just finished his Uber shift when a case of road rage turned deadly near Morris Avenue in the Cross Bronx Expressway. He was shot multiple times and died at the scene. We just don't have words to express. The anger and frustration that this incident created, he did nothing to deserve this. He was just working in the news. And just trying to provide for his family. What can we expect tomorrow? It's always a big event. Sure, good morning, Rich. Good morning, Erin. Thanks for having me. And you know, as the nation celebrating its 250th anniversary, the LIA celebrating. It's 100th anniversary this year. We were founded in 1926. Actually, our headquarters was in Manhattan before we came out to Nassau County and now in Suffolk County, and we're, we're kicking off the year with our state of the Region event which every year we have the Nassau County Executive. It'll be Bruce Blakeman and Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine, and this year, very timely given what we just discussed about the report from the state comptroller's office, we're going to have Tom DiNapoli with us and I'm going to moderate a conversation among the three of them, talk about the goals for the upcoming year. We asked our viewers to comment and ask questions to you today about what you know what they want to see in the new year, what their problems are. One person says starter homes no longer exist. When new apartment buildings are proposed, people scream, we're turning into Queens. The rent for apartments is more than many mortgages. Young adults are priced out of home ownership and struggling to afford rent. What can you tell that viewer, Matt? Sure, we're going to talk about this tomorrow at the state of the region of the issue of affordability. And look, you know, Long Island is a high cost. Region and when you're talking about median home prices in the 600,000, 700,000s, soaring to 800,000s, it's a real existential crisis for Long Island and we have to tackle this with more innovative thinking and more innovative solutions you know just for example, Heatherwood is a developer and they partnered with Governor Hochel on this tremendous public-private partnership to use state-owned land in East Farmingdale for housing. And so we need to keep building housing, not just affordable housing, but mixed use, I'm sorry, but all sorts of housing. Diverse housing options for our families so they can afford to live here. Accessory dwelling units is another innovative solution to try to tackle this, but we have to do it or else we're not going to be able to survive here as a region. "transcript": "While some in New Jersey pay for their commute with money, time, or patience, as News Twelve's Amanda Eustace reports. In today's toll of commuting, others have to muster up the courage just to get to work. Do you want to talk about New Jersey's bravest commuters, and no, they're not the ones battling traffic. They're the ones standing right here on a sliver of pavement wedged between speeding cars all the way to pick up a bus on the side of the highway. Let's face it, the cars are going right by. They're going 60, 70 miles an hour, one. Accidents can happen, right? It's just after 6:40 in the morning and Margaret Mans is on her way to work in New York, picking up the same bus here along Route 3 outside Clifton Commons for the past 5 years. Very convenient actually. I just wish that the enclosure was a little bit more secure, and she's not the only one. Others taking it say if you catch the bus. The sun is fully up. It's a quick 30 minute ride into New York Port Authority. It's busy. You get a seat though, and Jersey Transit is very consistent, so they, they, they run like clockwork. My coworkers think I'm crazy for doing it, but it's, it's reliable. There's a lot of buses passing in the morning and they always stop. So for me. It's the only way to go, but these are some of the most unusual stops in the state located on highway shoulders, entrance ramps, and sometimes narrow concrete islands. This one down there is better because they have like a little house that you can just protect yourself. This one, if you have a little something at least when it's raining, when it's super cold, but I mean. New Jersey Transit says it's up to the municipality to request a bus shelter be installed, and they'll do it at no cost to the town, county, or state entity depending on who owns the roadway. I mean, it makes sense. They get right on the highway. They allow them to have express buses, and they're in central locations. I wish more evenly divided up among some of the towns. It's a little frightening when the weather is iffy, but it's so convenient that I wouldn't go any other way. So for these riders, the toll of commuting isn't just time and money. It's standing inches from traffic and hoping every driver stays in their lane. In Clifton, Amanda Eustace, Newswell, New Jersey.",

"transcript": "Well, the new year is bringing higher tolls for commuters across Port Authority tunnels and bridges. This as many are heading back to their normal routines after the holiday break. News Twelve's Jill Croce is in Jersey City with what this means for drivers, and she has their reaction. With the new year comes new toll rates for Port Authority bridges and tunnels like here at Jersey City's Holland Tunnel. Eastbound traffic is now faced with a 3% toll hike, and that's regardless of EZPass or not. Driver Amacei Luskovic isn't thrilled with the move. They're getting into our wallets. And it's really not much you can do about it. He works in New York but tries to get out of driving a car as much as he can, taking a bus, putting the bike in a bus, and driving in Manhattan in a bicycle from a bus stop to my workplace, but I cannot always do it, especially now in the winter when it's getting a little colder. In addition to the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels, the George Washington, Bayonne, and Gothels bridges, and the Outerbridge crossing are now seeing the same increase since Sunday. Just after midnight, drivers will pay 1,679 with an EZPass during peak hours and then pay 1,479 cents with an EPass during off-peak hours. The Port Authority lists peak hours as weekdays 60 to 10 a.m., 4 to 8 p.m., and then Saturdays and Sundays 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Driver Mir Ali has mixed reviews on the concept of rate increases. I agree with them in certain ways, but not in like. Every year, any driver still using pay by plate will spend over $23 at any crossing. The fee comes at a time when just last month the Port Authority Board of Commissioners approved a capital plan for 2026 to 2035. The agency receives no taxpayer funding from the states it serves. "transcript": "Welcome back. From an increase in the gas tax to higher tolls, it's going to cost more to drive this year in New Jersey. New Jersey's gas tax is now up by over 4 cents a gallon as of the new year. The total is near 50 cents a gallon. Drivers in the state are paying some of the highest rates in the entire country, and it's another toll hike for the turnpike and Parkway, a 3% increase in effect. That's the 5th consecutive rise in tolls. If you're heading into the city, Port Authority is reaching deeper into your pockets as well. Starting Sunday, you'll see about a 3% increase, plus another 25 cents hike. That means if you cross the George Washington Bridge, Lincoln Holland tunnels, your EPs charge increases over 70 cents.",

"transcript": "Well, a new year will mean higher costs for New Jersey drivers. It's getting a whole lot more expensive to get around our state. In today's toll of commuting, News 12 New Jersey's Amanda Eustace takes a closer look at what is changing in 2026 and what it's going to mean for your commute. For New Jersey commuters, the new year is bringing higher costs when it comes to getting behind the wheel. The state's Gas taxes going up, meaning every time you pull up to the pump, you're expected to pay just a little bit more to keep moving. Don't like it. We were just getting used to it going back down, so now it's going back up, kind of going backwards to me. New Jersey's gas tax rate will cost 4.2 cents more per gallon in 2026. That will make the total gas tax rate nearly 49.1 cents per gallon. Close to some of the highest in the country, the money will be used to support the Transportation Trust Fund, which improves infrastructure in the state. For people like James Glopa, who works in construction and covers northern New Jersey. He says sometimes he fills up twice a day. That price adds up and it's a major hit to us. We're just trying to make a living. gas, it's part of our job and it takes a huge part of our profit, but it's not just fuel costs that are rising. The New Jersey Turnpike Authority has approved a 3% toll increase on both the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway. It's something that's happened every year since 2020. This means drivers could be paying roughly 16 cents more on many routine toll trips. This year for many who travel these major roadways daily, the increases add up, especially as budgets are stretched. The cost of living is going up and paid wages are not going up, so it's a time where we need to come together and try to fight for what we work hard for. That's how they get us every time and they say that we have to pay it by force, but yet we don't see no change behind it. So I hope we see a bigger change, a better change this year, and drivers say they'll still get to where they're going. They just wish it didn't cost so much to get there. "transcript": "Commuting is tough, tedious, and, well, time consuming, but one bus company in the Garden State is working to change that, making it safer and smoother with all the help of technology. New New Jersey's Amanda Eustace shows us how Academy bus is taking the toll of commuting before drivers even hit the road. Amanda, come on in. This is central dispatch. It's a look inside where every Academy bus trip really begins here in Hoboken, we average about 10. 50 vehicles and drivers daily, but company-wide we are monitoring and overseeing about 1500. Think of it as the brain of the operation, a room filled with monitors, maps, and constant movement. Take a look over here on the map. You'll see our footprint is pretty large on the east coast and at the center of it all, suck on technology, very easy to monitor hours of service, reaching out to drivers, monitoring their behaviors. It can actually divert you to use an. Alternate route. It can ask you to check your messages, tracking every bus on the road in real time. We can hover over any of the vehicles here and I can see the speed. I can see the driver. I could see the date, time of how long it's been idling, how long it's been running, everything like that, everything that would be relevant to our operations. And outside this is where all that information meets the road, tracking everything the driver needs to know, including information. Prior trips mileage and mileage. Each bus is equipped with nearly 8 cameras, one that monitors the passengers getting on and off the bus, the other monitoring the driver, another that pays attention to the passengers already on the bus, and the rest of the cameras on the exterior of the bus, helping give drivers a leg up and an extra set of eyes on the road. The cameras are really for the driver's protection and our passengers and. And actually the whole state or wherever we're working for their protection. It allows us to go back and review not only negative behaviors but show positive behaviors and reward positive behaviors. Academy is even going as far as testing out artificial intelligence and pre-collision warning software that would help assist drivers before a crash occurs. Now with inner city increasing, the airlines having issues, rail railroads having issues. Buses are becoming more of an important and integral part of our transportation system, and I think finally being realized in the US. We want to show them that we are taking the measures to improve as things change over time and keep them at ease. That's why this system and the watchful eyes inside dispatch give them the support they need to take the toll out of commuting in Hoboken, Anita Eustace.",

"transcript": "Well, here's a question. How many hours do you lose sitting in traffic each year? The answer may surprise you. News Twelve's Tom Krasnowski explains in today's toll of commuting. What would you do with 99 extra hours per year? According to one study, that's the amount of time we spend in the greater New York City area stuck in traffic. That's more than 4 whole days or 12 workday. What would you do with that time? A lot of things. Oh, I have no idea what I'd be doing. Probably working more. It does not surprise me at all with New York and New Jersey traffic and especially with the holidays now. This data comes from an annual study by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute. They've conducted since 1982. Over the years, the time lost to traffic has skyrocketed. The regions around Los Angeles and San Francisco are the only parts of the country where commuters lose more hours than here. It's usually 40 minutes, but today I spent an hour and a half hours just going to the city. South Jersey isn't much better. According to the A&M study. The average commuter in the greater Philadelphia region loses 70 hours. To traffic each year. 95 is terrible no matter where you are, even down in Baltimore, Washington. The team at Tamu says congestion is back to pre-pandemic levels, only now it's more spread out throughout the day and week due to the rise in work from home. It's changed now. Thursday is now the new Friday. They also say truck congestion has risen 19% from 2019 related to rising e-commerce and supply chain issues. There's also a hidden cost. The A&M study says New Jersey commuters lose on average 31 gallons of gasoline every year in traffic, with the average price per gallon just over $3.
